If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. ~Dr. Mitchell L. Gaynor, M.D.
What is sound healing?
Sound healing is one of the oldest and most natural forms of healing known to people.
It uses the power of sound to restore one’s mind, body and spirit back to a state of balance. The harmonic vibrations from the instruments used in sound healing have a deep penetrating effect on the receiver. The sound waves entrain the brain to move into the deeper Alpha, Theta and Delta brain wave frequencies, inducing a deep meditative and peaceful state. As human beings, we are comprised mainly of liquid, these vibrations deeply penetrate our bodies, moving through our tissues and organs. The sound resonates directly into our cellular memory releasing blockages and creating a profound sense of peace and relaxation. Like the breath in meditation, the sounds act as the focal point, reducing and eliminating mind chatter and leading to a release of deep rooted tensions and emotional blocks.
Benefits of Sound Healing and what you may experience:
Deepening of the meditation experience
Heightened perceptions and sensations in the body
Feeling more centered and balanced within

An enhanced sense of wellness
Decrease in stress, anxiety and depression
Release of blocked emotions
Calming the mind and stopping internal dialogue
Rebalancing the physical, emotional and spiritual bodies
Awakening higher states of consciousness conducive to healing and transformation
"Harmony sinks deep into the recesses of the soul and takes its strongest hold there, bringing grace also to the body & mind as well. Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order." Plato (429-347)
The sound of a master quality gong induces a state of spontaneous meditation and relaxation that facilitates the movement of chi or prana (positive life force) throughout the body. The movement of which on a physical level, eliminates tension, stimulates the circulation and glandular systems, and regenerates the parasympathetic nervous system.
More than a musical instrument, the gong is a conduit for vibrational waves of energy, releasing reverberating tones of great fullness and resonance that interact with the human body on a very deep, even cellular level. The gong facilitates deep meditation; it can open all the chakras and enable healing to more readily occur as the body concentrates on drawing in the sounds it needs to re-align and harmonise itself.
During a "gong bath", not only do you hear the gong sound but you also feel its vibrations on and inside your body. Listeners experience a sense of connectedness and peace. They are lulled into a Theta or REM sleep state where one is neither asleep nor awake. This is the state of dreams when our bodies begin to heal and rejuvenate. Many people emerge from the experience feeling lighter, more in balance, refreshed, and rejuvenated.
Gong baths are an excellent remedy for stress related issues, depression, fatigue, addictions, anger and hostility, feelings of fear, separation and loneliness along with many other conditions related to the lack of balance and harmony in the body. People often have the experience of floating in space, or in an ocean; some have inspiring visions, or see colours.
“Music is the mediator between the life of the senses and the life of the spirit.” Beethoven
At Breathe True Yoga I incorporate sounding and vocal toning into many of my workshops and yoga classes. I have Paiste gongs, singing bowls, Koshi chimes, tuning forks, mbiras and many other ethereal sounding instruments to help uplift your emotions into the ethers. I have didgeridoos, African djembe drums, Native hand drums, steel tongue drums, rain sticks and rattles etc. to help embody and ground your energy into the earth.
I offer hour-long sound journey experiences to individuals and small groups whereby people lie down comfortably and receive a "sound bath” that is deep, restorative and meditative.
A session usually begins with a discussion of what the individual is experiencing in their life and what kind of sounding they would prefer to have. From there, I invite the participant to get comfortable and relax while I incorporate the sounding that is most appropriate for their needs. I do my best to make sure one feels comfortable and safe even though at times, what naturally may arise from the emotional realm, could be uncomfortable.
In the end, a person usually leaves feeling rejuvenated and peaceful.
